Authorities reported that A suspect died and three Atlanta police officers were hospitalized with gunshot wounds after a street altercation occurred. in the city on Saturday afternoon.
Officers responded at 5:15 p.m. to a report of an armed man in a commercial area on Fairbanks Street. Upon arrival, they found the suspect with a gun and a knife on Desoto Avenue, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said during a press conference reported by local media.
“During that encounter there was a struggle and shots fired in which three of our officers were injured. Also resulted in the death of the individual who was armed with the gunSchierbaum noted.
The Atlanta Police Department did not immediately identify the deceased suspect.
The three officers were transported in police cars to Grady Memorial Hospital. According to authorities, one of the police officers was shot in the shoulder, another was shot in the leg, and the third suffered a superficial wound.
Two of the officers were expected to undergo surgery, Schierbaum said.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will lead the investigation into the shooting.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said he spoke with officers at the hospital and that they were “alert, conscious and breathing.”
“Once again you see that guns are causing harm in our communities,” Dickens said during the news conference outside the hospital, noting that he and other officials were on their way to a fundraiser for the police department when they were informed about the shooting.
