In Mexico, Mother’s Day is celebrated every May 10, a very special date in a country where there is a very strong connection to the family. However, this day is not experienced in the same way in all cases.

And, as it is also a country with an alarming number of missing people, Thousands of mothers suffer on this May 10th just like the rest of the year for not knowing the whereabouts of their children.

In this regard, the site La Silla Rota interviewed some search mothers, who agreed that the best gift would be to return their children alive, many of whom have been missing for years.

One of them is Leticia Del Carmen Valerio Hernandez, who since August 2015 has not heard from his son Ricardo Delgado Valerio. During these nine years she has searched properties and clandestine graves to find some trace that gives her hope.

“We always spent it as a family, my son was very affectionate with me. From then on it is no longer the same, I have a son who just died and May 10th are worse,” he indicated.

That is why now, every May 10, instead of celebrating with the family, they go to marches with members of the Solecito Collective of Veracruz, who also look for their loved ones, to demand that the state locate the missing people.

A slow death

Another unfortunate case is that of Hilda Moreno Hernandeza woman from Chiapas whose son, Jesús Esteban Mazariegos Moreno, was kidnapped on December 6, 2023.

That day, Jesus was with 3 other people when an armed commando took them away; only one of them later appeared, but lifeless.

Not having her son, Hilda confessed to La Silla Rota, is like a slow death, “something that has no name.” She also pointed out that, despite the lack of attention from the authorities, and not having received a single call or trace to find out about her loved one, He has faith that he will soon be reunited with him..

Like Leticia and Hilda, Lourdes Vargas He has been searching for his son Juan Carlos Silva Vargas since June 2019, when he disappeared in the municipality of Huauchinango, Puebla.

When recounting how she has lived every Mother’s Day for the last 5 years, she commented: “Inside your heart you feel the hole and instead of being happy you feel nostalgia, and instead of smiling you feel like you’re at a wake”.

She even assured that, since then, she has asked her other children not to give her anything on May 10, because instead of feeling happy she remembers Juan Carlos and starts crying.

“I have been with a psychologist because I was already thinking too many negative things, and the doctor tells me that there is someone to live for, right?, but For me there is no such date”, he concluded.
