Former President Donald Trump’s youngest son, Barron Trump, has declined to serve as a delegate to this summer’s Republican National Convention, according to a senior Trump campaign adviser and a statement from Melania Trump’s office.
“While Barron is honored to have been chosen as a delegate for the Republican Party of Florida, he regrettably declines due to prior commitments,” the statement from former first lady Melania Trump’s office said.
Barron Trump, who turned 18 in March, had been selected by the Florida Republican Party to serve as at-large delegate to the July convention.
Several other members of the Trump family, including Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump and Tiffany Trump, were also selected as delegates by the Florida Republican Party.
The Daily Mail first reported that Barron Trump was refusing to serve as a delegate.
The Republican National Committee (RNC) will hold its convention in Milwaukee in July.
Donald Trump has said he will likely announce his running mate at the RNC convention in July and has been floating several names both publicly and privately.
On Friday, Trump spoke about his relationship with his youngest son, but did not address his role as a delegate.
The presumptive Republican presidential nominee praised Barron Trump in a radio interview and said his 18-year-old son sometimes offers him political advice.
While much of the Trump family is involved in politics, Barron has mostly stayed on the sidelines. She turned 18 in March and will graduate high school on May 17.
Barron made no statement after being selected as a delegate, and the Trump campaign had no comment when asked about his selection.
