What happened?

The first block of the democratic exercise was barely carried out, in which the issue of security was discussed, one of the most important axes in Mexico, which is experiencing a crisis of violence, mainly caused by organized crime.

During Canvati’s intervention, the candidate mentioned: “For years we have been sold the idea that Mauricio shielded San Pedro, that is not true, it is a myth. What he did was make a pact with organized crime, there are recordings and journalistic reports that confirm it.”.

Fernández tried to respond to the accusations, but the format of the debate did not allow him the right of reply, so his microphone was turned off. Because he was trying to speak, the moderator pointed out that he could not do so, which caused him to become angry and he immediately left the place.

After what happened, the candidate issued a video message in which he explained the reason for his actions, arguing that He would not be in a place where he is not given the right of reply, “and even more so with that totally misplaced lady, because she doesn’t have the slightest knowledge. “I am being insulted because I come to a debate to talk about proposals and ideas, and we can have different opinions, but not to attack me because I am mixed with organized crime, that is a very strong accusation.”

The accusations of links with drug trafficking

Mauricio Fernández has an extensive career in politics, He has been municipal president of San Pedro Garza García on three occasions and he was senator of Nuevo León, in many of those years of working as a public servant, he was accused of having links with organized crime, according to Radio Formula.

First it was said that he had made an agreement with the Beltran Leyva, this when he established the so-called “Rudo Group” for security in the municipality. But, according to a publication in the weekly Proceso, in reality the group was in charge of preventing the passage of other criminal groups, as Jesús Gerardo Ledesma Campero, son of one of the former members of the group, confessed in 2016 – before a court in Dallas.

Years before that accusation, in 2009, His US visa was taken away because he tried to enter the country with marijuana. In 2010, the candidate acknowledged links with drug trafficker Alberto Mendoza, alias “El Chico Malo,” whom he paid to “purge” the police from him.

But his relationship with drug trafficking dates back more than two decades, although it was the criminals who sought him out in 2003 to try to finance his political campaign, since at that time he was seeking to be governor of Nuevo León, according to the book “Welcome to Sinaloa.” by Diego Enrique Osorno.

The author indicated that they were members of the Sinaloa Cartel who looked for him at that time, although he did not specify whether Fernández accepted what was offered. His relationship with the Sinaloa Cartel was highlighted again in 2023 when narcomantas appeared in San Pedro Garza García, in which he was accused of having handed over the municipality to said criminal organization.
