The Biden administration is expected to propose on Thursday a rule that will crack down on immigrants who are not eligible to apply for asylumfour sources familiar with the matter told Politico.

The next changes will address the stage at which immigrants may be deemed ineligible to apply for and receive asylum.

Under the current system, eligibility is determined based on a number of factors during the interview stage and the administration will propose the application of these standards during the initial selection stage.

That change in the rules for granting asylum would effectively allow the United States accelerate the expulsion of migrants that officials consider potentially ineligible to remain in the country due to risks to national security or public safety, according to the four people, who were granted anonymity to speak candidly about the administration’s plans.

The Department of Homeland Security will announce the new policy through a proposed rule on Thursday.

The regulation, which would still need to go through a public comment period, is not expected to result in a larger number of people who would be restricted from seeking asylum.

The proposed changes were first reported by Politico.

The White House has vowed to toughen its position on undocumented immigrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border, as Republican lawmakers continue to criticize President Joe Biden on immigration ahead of the November election and halt any legislative attempt in Congress to strengthen border security.
