High school graduates invited to apply to be mail carriers

Has it ever crossed your mind to be a postman and have a career in the postal service? Go ahead, it may be a more satisfying career than you could imagine.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has launched an invitation to those who will graduate from high school next month to apply for a job and build a career in this field. But these jobs are not just for graduates, the invitation is open to veterans, those looking for a career change and anyone else is welcome to consider postal occupations.

This is because there is a high demand for mail carriers, drivers and many other positions that offer you the possibility of working where you live, with a good salary, job stability, lifelong benefits and opportunities to advance professionally in that federal agency.

The USPS revealed that there are more than 637,000 postal jobs across the country; and you can apply for a job at a job fair or by visiting the page: www.usps.com/careers where they tell you the steps you have to follow.

Carlos Marroquín, an Angeleno, who retired as a mail carrier in 2021 after 35 years of service, said that the Postal Service offers many job options.

“They can not only be postmen but also work in administrative positions and as supervisors; and a great education is not required,” says Carlos, who adds that there has always been a great need for letter carriers and postal employees.

Among the advantages he obtained from his job as a postman was that he was able to support his family.

“Precisely because there is always a lack of employees, there is the opportunity to work overtime, and earn a little more.”

On a physical level, he says that being a postman, by walking a lot, allowed him to always stay in good physical condition and health.

“I always said that I was paid to exercise since the physical demand is strong.”

Among the disadvantages of being a postman, he says that they are often exposed to being victims of crimes and assaults when they have to work in dangerous areas.

“Perhaps another disadvantage is that now people order many things online, and that has caused people to send more packages, and everything has to be done at the same time; and sometimes, there are those who hurt their bodies from carrying the bag with correspondence and packages.”

But it is also known that a postman has to work regardless of the cold, heat and rain.

“The mail doesn’t even stop with the fires. “Sometimes we have to work when the air conditions are serious.”

Despite all the disadvantages, working for the Postal Service is worth it, he says because it offers good benefits.

“And if they have studies, especially from university, there is an opportunity to advance and obtain key positions in the post office, one of them is to be inspectors. “You don’t necessarily have to stay as a postman.”
