Kristi Noem, governor of South Dakota, is legally prohibited from entering the territories of three tribes that are part of the state she governs, this after having issued some comments where the Republican relates tribal leaders to drug cartels.

During a community forum held last month in Winner, South Dakota, The 52-year-old politician who aspires to be Donald Trump’s running mate mentioned that some tribal leaders from certain Native American reservations are focused on benefiting from drug cartels and therefore tend to neglect the education of their children.

“We have some tribal leaders who I believe personally benefit from the presence of the cartels and that is why they attack me every day,” he said.

This statement caused discomfort among certain tribes that since the beginning of the year had been implementing legal actions against the Republican in power.

In February, the Oglala Sioux Tribe voted to prohibit Noem from entering their reservation, an action that the Cheyenne River Sioux replicated earlier this month and which the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe also joined in this week.

In this regard, Janet Alkire, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council, released a statement in which she condemned the lack of policies aimed at solving the problems of the tribes instead of issuing baseless comments.

“Governor Kristi Noem’s wild and irresponsible attempt to connect tribal leaders and fathers to Mexican drug cartels is a sad reflection of her fear-based politics that does nothing to bring people together to solve problems.” .

Instead of making uninformed and unsubstantiated claims, Noem should work with tribal leaders to increase funding and resources for tribal law enforcement and education,” the letter states.

This way, The Watertown-born politician is already legally prohibited from entering about 10% of the territory she governs.

However, he clarified that prohibiting him from accessing certain parts of South Dakota will not solve the problems detected.

“Bailing Governor Noem does not solve the problem. She calls on all our tribal leaders to banish the cartels from tribal lands,” says a brief statement issued by the state government.
