Johan Vásquez’s future seems to be in Genoa where the Mexican midfielder has earned a place in coach Alberto Gilardino’s starting eleven, which is why he would be very close to reaching an agreement to extend his stay in the Serie A team.

According to a report by journalist Daniel Reyes from Fox Sports México, the 25-year-old midfielder has earned appreciation within Genoa and Negotiations to seek a contract renewal would be very well underway and it could be finalized in the coming months.

Although Johan Vásquez has a contract valid until June 30, 2026, it is speculated that the Mexican midfielder will agree to a renewal for three more seasons, further prolonging his stay in Genoa, where he arrived in 2021.

The midfielder who left Liga MX after successful spells with the Rayados de Monterrey and Pumas de la UNAM, has had a couple of experiences at Génova, including this year in which he seems to have established himself as a permanent fixture in half the field.

Johan Vásquez has played in all 25 matches for his team this season in Serie Aamong them Saturday’s match against the current Calcio champion, Naples, which ended in a draw (1-1) and in which he played the full 90 minutes and saw a yellow card.

After his arrival in 2021, the Mexican played 28 games in the Italian tournament in which he scored a goal. After that first experience in European football Vásquez was loaned to Cremonese, also from Serie A, where he also had a good performance with 25 games played and one goal.

After that season he returned to Genoa where he has established himself as one of the owners of the team’s midfield that is very close to achieving its goal for the current campaign by ensuring permanence. After Saturday’s draw, the Mexican’s team is in 12th place in the table.

Those led by Alberto Gilardino have a record of seven wins, nine draws and the same number of losses to add 30 points, 10 more than the last of the relegation places of this campaign in Italy, currently held by Hellas Verona, which has the Cagliari (18) and Salernitana (13).

In fact, Genoa is closer to qualifying for European competition next season. Johan Vásquez’s team is eight points away from sixth place, which gives access to the Conference League playoffs. AS Roma is, for now, the owner of that position.
