Will this be the year in which Bayern Munich ends its streak of titles? Since the 2012/2013 season, The Bavarians have dominated the Bundesliga. There have been many clubs that have put up a fight, but without winning the title. This year Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen could end the hegemony.

Before the last day of German football, Bayer Leverkusen was the leader of the championship, but only by two points advantage. Bayern Munich had in their hands the possibility of taking control of the Bundesliga again, but Xabi Alonso’s team did not disappoint.

On Saturday, February 10, both clubs met at the BayArena. Leverkusen gave their home respect by defeating Beyern by a crushing 3-0. With goals from Josip Stanisic, Alejandro Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong, Leverkusen obtained the victory that separates them 5 points from the Bavarian team.

This result is not a lying score at all. Xabi Alonso and his team crushed Bayern Munich in every way. Leverkusen had up to 14 shots, of which 8 were on goal. The Bavarians only finished once over the goal defended by Lukáš Hrádecký.

The revolution of Xabi Alonso

The former Spanish footballer came to the Bayer Leverkusen bench in the previous campaign. Since then, Xabi Alonso has been one of the main drivers of the drastic change in the club’s performance.

Since his arrival, Xabi Alonso has directed 69 games on the bench of the German team. Since then, Bayer Leverkusen has won 45 games, tied 14 and lost only 10. Under his leadership, Leverkusen has scored 164 goals and conceded 72, perhaps the most questionable feature of their process is the number of goals conceded.

However, the Spanish coach has become a coveted strategist in the market. It is worth remembering that this is his first experience as a coach in elite football, since he had previously directed in the lower categories of Real Sociedad.

There are still 12 rounds left in the German championship. Xabi Alonso and his Bayer Leverkusen could be the “chosen” to end Bayern Munich’s hegemony in the Bundesliga. For 12 years in Germany, a team other than Bayern has not lifted the league title; Leverkusen hopes to cut that statistic and starts with an 8-point lead to face the remainder of the season.
