17-year-old Ukrainian basketball player stabbed to death in Germany

17-year-old Ukrainian basketball player Volodymir Yermakov has died in Düsseldorf when he was stabbed this Saturday along with a compatriot who also played on the under-19 team of the ART Giants club in this German city, as explained by the Kiev Basketball Federation in a statement.

“On the eve of their next game the young basketball players were attacked with knives on the street simply for the fact of being Ukrainian,” reads the statement, which explains that the other attacked player, Artem Kozachenko, is in intensive care.

The federation note explains that the German Police are investigating the stabbing.

According to Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko, German authorities have arrested a person responsible for the attack. Nikolenko added that the life of the injured Ukrainian is not in danger.

Yermakov was born in 2006 and played with the Ukraine U-16 team in the European Basketball Championship held in Bulgaria in 2022.
