They identify the remains of a child who disappeared 20 years ago in Virginia, and whose mother is a suspect

In September 2022, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office discovered human remains in Galax, Virginia, determining that they had been there for a “long period.”

Now, more than a year after that discovery, he reported in a statement that the remains were identified as those of Logan Nathaniel Bowmana 5-year-old boy who disappeared in January 2003.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, authorities enlisted the help of Othram Inc., a private Texas company that specializes in forensic genealogical analysis to assist in unsolved cases across the country.

The company was able to “develop a complete DNA profile that allowed them to use forensic genetic genealogy and two direct DNA comparisons of family members to identify the remains as Logan Nathaniel Bowman,” the statement mentions.

His mother would face new charges

The discovery was made in a trash can in a wooded area on Iron Ridge Road., in Galax. A sleeping bag, a white Winnie the Pooh blanket with pink flowers and a piece of fabric were also found at the scene, according to the site DNASolves.com.

His mother, Cynthia Davisand her then boyfriend, Dennis Schermerhornwere arrested and charged shortly after Logan disappeared in January 2003.

Davis agreed to serve 15 years in prison and 15 years of probation for two felony counts of child neglect and one felony count of murder in April 2004, Grayson County Court documents show.

Schermerhorn was sentenced in 2004 to a year in prison for felony child neglect, and a judge dismissed murder and neglect charges against him.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office said The investigation is ongoing and new charges are anticipated in the case..
