Special Counsel Jack Smith’s office on Wednesday asked the judge presiding over the case to prohibit former President Donald Trump from making false claims that the charges he faces for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election are politically motivated, in court.

Prosecutor Jack Smith seeks to prevent former President Trump from making “political attacks” about his criminal prosecution for federal subversion of the 2020 election at trial, urging a judge to prohibit Trump from stating to jurors that is being selectively prosecuted for political reasons.

“Through public statements, presentations, and arguments at Court hearings, the defense has attempted to inject partisan political attacks and irrelevant and prejudicial issues into this case that have no place in a jury trial,” wrote special assistant prosecutor Molly Gaston. , from the office of prosecutor Jack Smith, in court documents filed Wednesday.

“While the Court may recognize these efforts for what they are and ignore them, the jury, if subject to them, may not do so,” Smith’s office said.

“The Court should not allow the defendant to turn the courtroom into a forum in which he spreads irrelevant disinformation and should reject his attempt to inject politics into these proceedings,” the document continues.

He has also made repeated claims of an alleged “electoral fraud” in the 2020 elections which have not been proven to be true.

In a written statement, Trump said Wednesday that Smith is “obsessed” with him and “ignores the law and the clear instructions of District Court Judge Chutkan, who unequivocally stated that this ‘case’ is on hold and there should be no litigation. Spot”.

Trump and his lawyers have also long sought to delay the trial and asked appeals judges to dismiss the case, arguing that Trump has immunity from prosecution for actions taken as president.

Judge Chutkan had scheduled a trial for March, but that calendar is up in the air due to pre-trial maneuvering of the 2024 Republican front-runner.

A federal grand jury indicted Trump in Washington DC for participating in a conspiracy to subvert the results of the 2020 election in his favor.

Trump is also trying to delay three more trials against him during the 2024 election year.
