He Chelsea was left with a bitter taste in the run-up to Christmas after suffering a tough defeat this Sunday on their visit to Wolverhampton (2-1) in a match that revealed the failures that the Blues have been showing during the current Premier League season.
In the match that closed matchday 18 of the English championship (with the rescheduling of Manchester City vs. Brentford) The London team failed to make the most of a very good half at the Molineux Stadium in the West Midlands where those led by Argentine Mauricio Pochettino generated the attack but came up blank.
Raheem Sterling starred in the clearest opportunity for Chelsea in a play that left three Blues players against the Wolves goalkeeper, Jose Sá. The English winger chose to define one-on-one instead of giving the ball to one of his teammates and ended up crashing the ball into the face of the Portuguese goalkeeper.
Chelsea’s dominance in the first 45 minutes of the game was to such an extent that it was not until the second half that the home team reacted and ended up putting the Blues’ defense in trouble, which was once again evident in the was the eighth defeat for the Londoners in what is being a season to forget.
The experienced Gabonese striker Mario Lemina was in charge of opening the scoring for Wolves with a header after a cross from Spaniard Pablo Sarabia (m.51). The home team’s goal destabilized Chelsea, who couldn’t find a way to break the Wolverhampton goal, which was looking to advance its Christmas gift.
But the game had a couple of minutes of intensity in store towards the end when the match was finished. Already in added time the Wolves increased the distance with Chelsea thanks to a goal from Matt Doherty (m.93), but The Londoners had a small reaction with Christopher Nkunku’s goal (m.96), although it was not enough.
This result is a hard blow for Chelsea, which is still unable to stand out in this first half of the Premier League season. After a last season in which they finished in 12th place and were left out of European competitions, Les Bleus seem to be on their way to the same thing. This Sunday’s defeat leaves them in tenth position with just 22 points.
Mauricio Pochettino’s team accumulates almost half the points of the championship leader, Arsenal (40) and is 14 units away from fourth place, the last one with access to the Champions League which is held by Tottenham. In addition, they are 12 behind fifth place currently occupied by Manchester City, who still have one game less.
