The Miami Heat announced Thursday that they will retire Udonis Haslem’s No. 40 jersey during a special ceremony on Jan. 19, 2024.. Haslem, 43, is the player with the most seasons with the Heat, with 20, and won three NBA championships.
Haslem was taken as an undrafted agent by Florida. He quickly became a key player for the team, helping lead them to the NBA Finals in 2006.
He won his first championship with the Heat that season, and then helped the team win two more championships in 2012 and 2013.
In addition to his contributions on the court, Haslem was also an important leader in the Heat locker room. He was named team captain in 2012 and earned the respect of his teammates and coaches for his work ethic and commitment to success.
“This is a great legacy, a moment of gratitude that he has earned over 20 years of being an incredible championship player and, most importantly, the best leader,” Heat president Pat Riley said in a press release. “He’s going to have his day and I can’t wait to see his jersey hanging in the rafters.”
Udonis Haslem’s career
Haslem has been a productive player throughout his career. He has averaged 7.5 points, 6.6 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game in his career. He is also a tenacious defender and a physical player who is always willing to sacrifice himself for his team.
Udonis Haslem has been a key player in the Heat’s success over the past two decades. His retirement will be a special moment for the franchise and for Heat fans.
The center is the only player along with Kobe Bryant and Dirk Nowitzki to play 20 seasons with the same franchise.
His 147 postseason appearances are the most by an undrafted player in league history.
