Sergio Mora, former welterweight world champion, assured that Jaime Munguía deserves the opportunity to face to Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez if he defeats John Ryder, a fight that will take place on January 27 in Phoenix, Arizona.

In an interview with Fight Hub TV, Mora believes that Golden Boy Promotions has to take advantage of Munguía’s performance against Sergiy Derevyanchenko and a possible victory over Ryder so that the one from Tijuana can get the long-awaited confrontation against Canelo Álvarez.

“I do not have any problem with that. Munguía, they have been holding him back for a fight with Canelo. It’s time to cash in if you’re Golden Boy Promotions and Munguía, the performance he put on against Sergiy Derevyanchenko, a fight of the year and another potential fight of the year with John Ryder in the offing. If he overcomes that, I think he deserves a retirement against Canelo. Why not?,” he said.

It should be noted that Jaime Munguía will have a great challenge ahead of him in January when he faces John Ryder because if he wins the fight he would reaffirm his position as official challenger for the Boxing Organization (WBO) and He could face the Guadalajara in May, according to ESPN’s Salvador Rodríguez. Although, Canelo Álvarez himself denied this information and expressed that he will begin to review his options to decide who will be the next to enter the ring with him.

If he doesn’t get the fight with the multi-time Mexican champion, Munguía would like to measure his strength against David Benavídez because he wants to seek a world title and is one of the biggest names in the division. After his victory against Sergiy Derevyanchenko, the one from Tijuana had some conversations with the Mexican Monster, but in the end a fight between the two did not materialize.

“First of all, be victorious against John Ryder, let everything go well, and then from there, look for a world championship. Either with Canelo or with Benavídez”, he declared to Izquierdazo.

The Mexican made his super middleweight debut against the Ukrainian in June and defeated him by unanimous decision in a close match that was decided by a knockdown by the Tijuana fighter in the last round. Besides, This fight against the British will be Munguía’s second in the division.

On the other hand, Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, 33, showed that he is still at the top and increased his legacy in the sport after beating Jermell Charlo last September by a wide unanimous decision. The undisputed Mexican 168-pound champion He has a record of 60 wins (39 by knockout), two losses and two draws in his professional career.
