Authorities say an Ohio woman was arrested after allegedly he intentionally shot his 6-month-old granddaughter in the faceleaving the girl seriously injured.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office indicated that Mia Desiree Harris, 43, is charged with three counts of felony assault, although the charges are subject to change as the investigation progresses.
Officers responded to a home in Liberty Township, Ohio, on Saturday around 1:50 a.m. after a report of a baby shot. When they arrived at the scene, officers learned that a 6-month-old girl had been shot in the head.
“It wasn’t an accident. It was on purpose. This is one of the most disgusting and vile criminal acts I have ever seen: shooting a six-month-old baby. What makes it even worse is that this is the baby’s grandmother,” Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones told WXIX.
The baby was taken to a hospital for treatment. She underwent two surgeries but remains in critical condition.according to the authorities.
Harris fled the scene before officers arrived, but was found a short time later on northbound Interstate 75 and arrested without incident.
Witnesses to the shooting identified Harris as the shooter. The woman had shot several family members before intentionally targeting the girl, the sheriff’s office wrote.
Several family members were arguing before Harris grabbed the gun. He then allegedly shot his daughter and missed before shooting his young granddaughter.
“She went and shot this kid and doesn’t seem to have any remorse. I feel sorry for the baby, the family, everyone who is dealing with this. The doctors, the life team people, the helpers, everyone. “This is as bad as it sounds,” Jones said.
Harris is being held in the Butler County Jail without bond.
