Brenda Lee ousts Mariah Carey on the Billboard Chart with “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”
The Christmas season has arrived accompanied by an unusual surprise in the world of festive music. Mariah Carey’s classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which traditionally dominates the season, has been dethroned this year by Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.”a song released in 1958 when the singer was just 13 years old.
Although “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” found popularity in the ’90s thanks to its inclusion on the “Home Alone” soundtrack, it has seen a surprising resurgence this year. The song has reached number 1 on the Billboard chart, displacing Mariah Carey, known as the “queen of Christmas.”
The phenomenon can be attributed to intensified promotion, including the release of a new video clip and the arrival of Brenda Lee on the TikTok platform. Social media has once again played a crucial role in the revitalization of this classic, crowning a new leading figure in holiday music.
Speaking to The New York Times, Brenda Lee shared memories of her career, including anecdotes like appearing on a television show with Elvis Presley and having the Beatles as an opening act. Faced with the competition with Mariah Carey, Brenda joked: “Now I’m a little worried about Mariah Carey, but there’s room for everyone here. Her song is very good. “I love the way he sings.”
Competition between the two artists has intensified, with Mariah leading in radio plays but falling behind Lee in downloads. Nonetheless, Mariah has raised more than 32 million euros with her classic so far. Other songs like “Last Christmas” by Wham! and Burl Ives’ “A Holly Jolly Christmas” also compete, but appear to be far from challenging for first place.
In 2022, Billboard estimated that Mariah Carey collects $1.55 million annually in royalties, with an additional $830,000 for the use of the song on various platforms. Since its release in 1994, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has generated more than $60 million, according to the Guinness Book of Records, establishing itself as the highest-charting single by a solo artist on the Billboard chart. US Hot 100.
