Inside of the Sinaloa Cartel There are public figures who have become priority targets for the authorities of Mexico and the United States, such as Ovidio Guzman and Néstor Isidro Pérez Salasalias “El Nini”, two of the most important members of the criminal group who were arrested this year.
Likewise, there are those who have lived in hiding for years and, to this day, remain fugitives from justice, such is the case of the rest of Los Chapitos and Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.
However, there are also those who perform important functions within the cartel, but have known how to operate with great discretion, going unnoticed by the authorities.
In that area comes José Ángel Canobbio Inzunzabetter known as “El Güerito”, and who is considered the brilliant mind behind the children of Chapo Guzman.
According to Mexican journalist and drug trafficking expert Anabel Hernández, Canobbio Inzunza plays a key role in fentanyl trafficking and, unlike the cartel’s top leaders, is not on the United States’ list of priority targets.
“Be careful with this character, because until now no one has talked about him, it is the first time his name has been publicly mentioned. It is a guy named José Ángel Canobbio, who is considered the brilliant mind of Los Chapitos,” the journalist mentioned in an interview for Radio Formula.
“He is one of the engineers, one of the creators of this criminal brand and is one of the main precursors of fentanyl trafficking. If they arrested Los Chapitos, all the brothers, and José Ángel Canobbio remained, that would be enough to start over, to reset the criminal organization,” said Hernández.
Proposed manufacturing and trafficking of fentanyl
The identity of “El Güerito” came to light after the capture of “El Nini” in Culiacán, Sinaloa, since one version of his arrest indicates that the security chief of Los Chapitos was betrayed by his own bosses.
According to a contributor to the Borderland Beat portal, identified as Vivienne Hearst, everything was agreed upon in a meeting between El Chapo’s children and three of his main collaborators: Oscar Noah Medinaalias “El Panu”; Kevin Gil Acostaalias “El 200”, and José Ángel Canobbio Inzunza.
The importance of “El Güerito” had already been revealed in May 2023 through an email sent by Damaso López Serranoalias “El Mini Lic”, to various media such as Zeta Tijuana, Riodoce and Borderland Beat.
The document was a response to the letter that Los Chapitos sent days before to the newspaper Milenio, in which they distanced themselves from trafficking fentanyl to the United States.
According to Dámaso, “El Güerito” was the one who proposed manufacturing fake oxycodone pills contaminated with fentanyl, as he assured that it would be a more lucrative business than cocaine or heroin trafficking.
Despite these allegations, Canobbio Inzunza has not been identified by the United States as one of the top operators of Los Chapitos, although that situation could change very soon.
