The Alberto J. Armando stadium, better known as ‘La Bombonera’, Boca Juniors club court, has been closed by the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, the entity announced this Friday.
According to the statement released on the social networks of the ‘xeneize’ club, the capital’s Executive alleged “that its capacity had been exceeded”, which is why it closed it.
Last night the stadium was the scene of the duel between the teams of Argentina and Uruguay, corresponding to the fifth day of the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, which ended with a 0-2 visitor victory.
“Proud to have received the world champions at home in a festive atmosphere and with total normality, the Boca Juniors Athletic Club announces that, despite not having exceeded the maximum capacity of the stadium, the GCBA government control agency decided, the meeting endedthe closure of La Bombonera for alleging that its capacity had been exceeded,” reads the text from the La Ribera club.
In the opinion of Boca Juniors, this action “evidences animosity against the institution, something that has been suggestively reiterated on several occasions so far this year.”
This suspension comes at a time when the club is immersed in the fight towards the December 2 elections, which will be attended by the list made up of the current vice president, the former soccer player Juan Román Riquelme, and as number two the current president, Jorge Ameal; and the opponent of that management, formed by politicians Andrés Ibarra and Mauricio Macri.
This last candidacy, whose candidate for vice president already led the entity between 1995 and 2007 before launching his political career, The day before, he presented challenges to several groups that support Riquelme, although the holding of the elections is not in danger.
The government of the City of Buenos Aires, for which Macri himself was responsible between 2007 and 2015, is currently in the hands of Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, from the same party as the former president (2015-2019), Republican Proposal (Pro), integrated into the Together for Change coalition (center-right).
Soon, his place will be taken by Jorge Macri, cousin of the former president and winner in the October 22 elections.
