Amazon, the e-commerce giant, is taking leaps and bounds in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). His latest project, code-named “Olympus”, seeks create a Large Language Model (LLM) with an impressive 2 billion parameters. This could position it as one of the largest models in training to date. Comparatively, OpenAI’s renowned GPT-4 model has “only” one billion parameters.

The brains behind Olympus is Rohit Prasad, former head of Alexa at Amazon, who now reports directly to CEO Andy Jassy. In his role as Chief Scientist of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) at Amazon, Prasad has assembled a team of researchers from across Alexa AI and Amazon’s science team. This elite group has dedicated itself to the task of training cutting-edge language modelsthus consolidating artificial intelligence efforts throughout the company.

Amazon bets on AI

Amazon is no stranger to training AI models, as has previously launched models such as Titan and collaborated with AI model startupssuch as Anthropic and AI21 Labs. These models not only strengthen Amazon’s capabilities, but are also offered to Amazon Web Services (AWS) users, demonstrating a strategic focus on the cloud.

Amazon’s investment in local language models is no coincidence. The company believes this strategy could make its offerings more attractive on AWS, where enterprise customers are looking to access high-performance models. Although there is no specific timeline for Olympus’ launch, the project promises to revolutionize the way companies interact with artificial intelligence.

At a time when Large Language Models (LLM) technology drives AI tools, Amazon seeks to consolidate its position as a leader. The ability to generate human-like responses from vast data sets is key, and Amazon is willing to invest heavily in this technology, as evidenced in its April earnings conference call.
