“I drank until I passed out”: Wayne Rooney confessed his descent into alcohol when he was a footballer

“I have had many different challenges, both on and off the field, and my release was alcohol,” he added.

Rooney explained that his belief that he had to solve the problems alone, without seeking help, was what led him to drink non-stopsimply seeking to stop thinking about all the pressure and tension he felt about being a footballer.

“I didn’t know how else to deal with it, so I chose alcohol to try to help me get through it (…) When you do that and let yourself be helped or guided by other people, you can really stay in the hole… And I was like that for a few years,” said the Englishman.
