The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obradorcongratulated at the National Palace the athletes who positioned the country in the third place in the overall medal table of the Pan American Games that ended this Sunday in Santiago, Chile.
The Mexican delegation ended with a balance without history of 52 gold medals among 142 metals.
“Gold record was reached with 52 for a total of 142 medals, something never achieved. Since 1955, only twice, in 2019 and now, we occupy third place,” the president highlighted in a message on his social networks accompanied by a photograph with the group of competitors who had already returned to the country from the Chilean capital.
Furthermore, he took the opportunity to recognize the support of the relatives of Mexican competitors and their coaches, as well as sports sponsor brands and state governments.
He also highlighted the efforts of institutions such as Secretaries of the Navy (Semar) and of the National Defense (Sedena), and the director of the National Commission of Physical Culture and Sports (Conade) and former Olympic medalist, Ana Gabriela Guevara.
Before the start of the Pan American Games, the Mexican president met with the athletes and He expressed his confidence in their performance in Chile.
“There is direct support for sport for all members of the delegation and a little more for those who bring a medal. The resources are now ready for Mexico to be in a very good place in Chile”, stressed the president.
This, after a controversy due to lack of support for Mexican competitors, which led to public controversies between athletes and the head of Conade herself and will motivate different brands to support with financial resources and in kind.
However, during the meeting last October, Guevara clarified that the Mexican athletes would be supported by a sum of more than 1,000 million pesos for this edition of the Games.
“The 1,000 million pesos of direct support are going to be exceeded; Never before has so much money been given to support athletes. We are going for our best role in Chile,” said the silver medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.
In the previous edition of the 2019 Pan American Games, in Lima, the country finished in el third place in the medal table with 138 medals; 37 gold, 39 silver and 62 bronze, only behind the United States and Brazil.
