The New York Marathon has a new king: Ethiopian Tamirat Tola set a record in the race

Tamirat Tola made history this Sunday, by proclaiming himself champion of the New York Marathon and set a record in the race, something that has not happened for 12 years.

The athlete who won gold medal at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugenedominated the test from start to finish and completed his work by reaching the finish line first and breaking the record established since 2011.

With your brand 2:04:58, Tola dethroned Kenyan Geoffrey Mutaiwho had the record of 2:05:06.

Tola also took over from fellow Kenyan Evans Chebet, who won the event in 2022, but did not participate in the 2023 edition.

The winner of the 2021 edition, Albert Korir, finished in second place with 2:06:57, almost two minutes behind the winner.

Third place went to Shura Kitata, one of the favorites to win, but who did not achieve his goal, although he did manage to get on the podium with his 2:07:11.

With this result, the new king of the Big Apple marathon was happy, after two failed attempts in which he failed to enter the Top 3.

“I’m happy to win the New York City Marathon for the first time. It is the third time I have participated, twice the number 4 position. The route is very difficult. Everything is fine for my training, my body, everything is fine. So I win,” said Tola.

Unlike the men’s competition, the Kenyan Hellen Obiriconfirmed her status as favorite and won the race.

The current champion of the Boston Marathon crossed the finish line with a time of 2:27:23 second in a final sprint against the Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey, who could not beat the Kenyan.

“I was worried because the others were very strong. But in a marathon you have to be patient, let’s be patient until we get to Central Park and then we’ll see what happens at the end,” she said at the end of the test.

It is worth mentioning that The women’s competition had a hectic closingsince the best three arrived equal to the last kilometer and crossed the finish line with hundredths of a difference in time.

The second position went to the Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey, who finished with 2:27:29, while the third place went to the Kenyan Sharon Lokedi, who registered 2:27:33.
