‘Wednesday’ actress leaves the series mid-filming

The series of Netflix’s “Wednesday” has faced a significant setback after the departure of one of the main cast members.

This spin-off of the Addams Family, centered on the character made famous by Christina Riccibecame a hit upon its release in November 2021. Its popularity quickly led to the authorization of a second season, with Jenna Ortega reprising her role as the psychic teenager from her time at Nevermore Academy. Production was underway in Romania when the Hollywood strike abruptly halted filming.

As the strike continues five months later, “Wednesday” faces the news that Thora Birch, who joined the series in a relevant role, had to leave without completing her scenes.

A representative for MGM, the series’ production company, announced that Birch returned to the United States due to a personal matter and will not resume production.

Sources close to the situation reported that Birch, known for her role in “Ghost World,” had to return to care for a sick family member. Although Birch did not complete all of his scenes, he had filmed most of them. In the second season, Birch played Tamara Novak, Merlina’s dorm supervisor.

Uncertainty surrounds the use of scenes filmed by Birch in the series, and it has not been confirmed whether a replacement will be sought or whether new characters will be added to conclude Novak’s story.

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán, who play Morticia and Homer Addamswill return to accompany Jenna Ortega in the second season.

He success of “Wednesday” was evident a week after its release when it accumulated a total of 341.2 million hours of streaming, surpassing the record of “Stranger Things.”
