Sergio “Checo” Pérez will have an uphill challenge this Sunday at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix after finishing ninth in the standings after a complicated session in which His Red Bull teammate, Max Verstappen took pole position.

The Mexican, like the rest of the pilots, had to battle in a session in which adverse weather conditions were the protagonists at Interlagoswhere the imminent threats of rain caused Q3 to end with 4:19 minutes remaining.

The man from Guadalajara was dissatisfied with his performance in the rankings, although He is confident that he will be able to raise the level both in the Sprint this Saturday and in the race on Sunday. which will take place at the José Carlos Pace Autodrome.

“What happened was really unfortunate because we had something much better for us”acknowledged “Checo” Pérez, who added: “Despite that, I think there are good points and good opportunities to run from there”.

Keeping a positive mind will be essential for the Mexican in these next few days in which he needs a good result to keep at bay, or even increase the distance with respect to Lewis Hamilton in the fight for the runner-up position in F1.

The seven-time Formula 1 champion achieved the fifth best time this Friday so he starts with a small advantage over the Mexican for Sunday. The distance between the two in the driver classification this 2023 is just 20 points.

About his performance, “Checo” Pérez explained: “My lap was very close to that of (Max) Verstappen until the last corner where I met Oscar Piastri, so I had to abort it and that meant running out of time”.

The result was not what was expected at Red Bull for “Checo” Pérez who comes from an unfortunate performance last week at the Mexico City Grand Prix where he could not complete a single lap when he was accidentally hit by Charles Leclerc which left him out of race.
