The Premier League has decided to demote referee Anthony Taylor for this weekend, after he conceded a non-existent penalty in the match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United last day.

Taylor awarded a penalty for an alleged kick by Hwang-Hee Chan to Fabian Schar that did not exist and the VAR He did not intervene to correct the action. The penalty made it 1-2 for Newcastle, who ended up tying the game.

“It was an outrageous decision,” Wolves manager Gary O’Neil said. “It was a terrible decision on the field and also terrible that the VAR did not intervene.”

Taylor will take charge of a Championship game for the first time in four years when he takes charge of Preston North against Coventry City.

However, Taylor is not the first referee to be demoted this season for a similar error as Adrian Holmeslineman, had to work on the wing of a Milwall-Hull team after being the man who annulled Luis Díaz’s goal against Tottenham Hotspur on the field.

A woman will be the fourth referee in the Premier League for the first time in history

Englishwoman Rebecca Welch will be the fourth referee in the Premier League match between Fulham and Manchester United this Saturday and will become the first woman to play that role in the history of the competition.

Welch, who was the first woman to officiate a Championship match (English Second Division) last Januaryo, he took charge of three matches in the last World Cup, including one in the round of 16, in addition to having directed two finals of the Women’s English Cup (2017 and 2020).

She was also the first woman to referee a professional men’s football match in 2021, in a duel between Port Vale and Harrogate Town in League Two (English fourth division).

Although there has never been a fourth referee in the history of the competition until now, there have been three lines judges: Wendy Toms, who paved the way in 1997, Sian Massey-Ellis and Natalie Aspinall.
