An absolute boxing legend, Roberto ‘Mano de Piedra’ Duránwas one of the celebrities invited to the fight between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou that took place in Saudi Arabia a few days ago.
Always with many fans and press around him, the former Panamanian boxer shared some interesting statements remembering his historic lawsuits against ‘Sugar’ Ray Leonard.
Durán was asked if he would face Leonard again in the ring, both 62 and 67 years old respectively, in a fight to showcase legends.
“At once, once and for all, dad”said the channel, something that astonished and raised smiles on the ESPN set, where Mano de Piedra was giving his appreciation of the Fury vs. fight. Ngannou.
The legendary trilogy between Mano de Piedra Durán and Sugar Ray Leonard began in 1980, with the Panamanian taking the undefeated title and the welterweight championship from the American.
A few months after the rematch was declared in favor of Leonard, he managed to recover his welterweight belts in a fight that went down in history due to the surrender of Roberto Durán, exhausted from receiving so many blows.
“No more, no more,” the Panamanian said during the fight, as a sign of surrender. Later, he confessed that he did not prepare well for the tournament: “I spent a lot of time traveling, enjoying myself. “I didn’t prepare.”
The conclusion of the trilogy had to wait nine years. In Las Vegas, Sugar Ray Leonard won another victory and emerged victorious over the Panamanian.
Both delivered the best boxing they could give, not only in the three clashes they faced but in their boxing careers.
While Mano de Piedra Durán retired in 2001 with a record of 103 wins (70 by knockout) and 16 losses, Leonard had already said goodbye in 1997 with 36 wins (25 by KO) and 3 setbacks.
