Derek Rosa, the 13-year-old minor accused of stabbing his mother to death on October 12 in his apartment in Hialeah, a city near Miami, He pleaded not guilty this Tuesday of the charge of first degree murder for which he will be tried as an adult.
Although Rosa, imprisoned in MetroWest Detention Centerin Doral, does not face the death penalty, yes could receive a life sentence for the murder of his mother, if convicted.
During a bail hearing held last Friday (which was denied), the minor’s father and grandmother testified on the boy’s behalf so that the judge would allow Rosa to remain under house arrest until the trial.
In more than 20 letters sent to the court, Rosa’s father described the teen as “a respectful honor roll student” at the iMater Academy, Hialeahand said that he was “a good boy very loved by his friends,” reported the NBCMiami channel.
The father assured that he did not know what could have led his son to commit this action and that, after having been in the Army for 22 years, he had taught Rosa good values. For all this, he asked for a “second chance” for his son.
The hearing occurs a few days after the chilling calls to the 911 emergency line in which Rosa contacted the Police after the murder.
The event occurred on the night of October 12 in a Hialeah apartment complex, where the minor allegedly stabbed his mother, whose lifeless body was found next to the crib of a baby who was unharmed.
Rosa called the emergency number around 11:30 pm local time to report that she had just murdered her mother, Irina García, 39 years old.
The baby remains in the care of a grandmother and García’s husband, the detained minor’s stepfather, who was outside of Florida at the time of the event.
According to the hypothesis used by the Police, The minor waited until his mother fell asleep and then stabbed her several times. He then took photographs of his mother’s body and sent them to a friend via social media, and told the same friend over the phone that he had killed her, according to the police report.
The motivations for the crime are still unknown.
Located in Miami-Dade County, Hialeah is a primarily Hispanic city and is the sixth largest municipality in Florida. It is home to more than 224,000 residents.
