The authorities reported that a muslim pediatricianidentified as Dr. Talat Jehan Khan, was stabbed to death by a man who seemed to come out of nowhere while she was sitting at a picnic table outside her Texas apartment on Saturday.
When the incident occurred, several witnesses tried to help Khan, a 52-year-old Pakistani-American and practicing Muslim who worked in Texas Children’s Pediatrics ConroeHowever, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses gave officers a description of the incident, according to Conroe police.
Shortly after 12:30 pm local time, Agents arrested Miles Fridrich, 24,, after a brief foot chase. He is charged with first degree murder.
Sergeant David Dickinson said Conroe police are still has found no evidence to support that the motive was related to race or ethnicity, but they are in the process of searching Fridrich’s social media and computers after obtaining search warrants.
Police and Khan’s family said that, to their knowledge, the Muslim pediatrician did not know Fridrich.
“So far, it seems like this is completely random,” Dickinson said.
He Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in Texas He said the organization is in talks with authorities about the murder.
“We are not sure at this time if this was a hate crime; However, given the tragic circumstances, we are paying close attention to the investigation,” reads the CAIR statement cited by NBC News.
The conroe police She still isn’t sure how Fridrich got into Alys Apartments, the gated luxury complex where Khan lived. Dickinson said in many of the cases she has dealt with, the doors don’t work or the offenders follow someone else.
Khan leaves behind a 14-year-old daughter, a 23-year-old son and a reputation as a kind and caring doctor.
Fridrich is currently in prison. montgomery county and a judge set his bond at $500,000, according to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office. Police said he has a criminal record for traffic violations, a drug record and illegal carrying of a firearm.
Masjid Al Ansaar, the Conroe mosque that Khan attended, hosted a prayer for her on Sunday.
Masjid Al-Sahabah, another mosque in Conroe, also expressed its condolences to Khan’s family. “It is essential that all of us remain vigilant and prioritize our safety and that of our fellow community members,” the house of worship said in a statement.
