Mexico evacuates 263 foreigners from Acapulco after Hurricane Otis

At least 263 people from 15 countries were located and evacuated from the resort of Acapulco, in the southern state of Guerrero, after the impact of Hurricane Otis, the Mexican Foreign Ministry reported this Sunday.

Among the evacuees are 187 citizens from Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Japan, Peru and Switzerland who were being searched, the government entity indicated in a statement.

In addition, he specified, “2 people from Belgium, 4 from Costa Rica, 17 from Cuba, 34 from the United States, 18 from France, and one from the United Kingdom have been located, adding another 76 foreign people, making a total of 263 people located and removed from Acapulco” as of this Sunday afternoon.

The Foreign Ministry indicated that these actions They are the response to requests from other countries for the location of its citizens after the disaster caused by Hurricane Otis, which hit Acapulco last Wednesday and has so far left 48 dead, six missing, dozens injured and extensive damage.

President Andrés López Obrador, in a video published on his social networks, assured that “all economic, tourist and commercial activity” in Acapulco will soon be reactivated.

He said he invited representatives of the banks and the business sector “so that together we can all put Acapulco on its feet (…) “We are going to accomplish the feat, together, of putting Acapulco back on its feet, starting with its people, with the poorest and most needy.”

Since Friday afternoon, some 10,000 agents from the Army, Navy and National Guard (GN) have sought to restore order among a desperate population frustrated by the shortage of water and food, in addition to the lack of electricity, telecommunications. and fuel shortages.

Cyclone Otis suddenly intensified and in less than 12 hours went from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane, becoming one of the most powerful cyclones in history in the Pacific Ocean.
