Sarah Katz, a 21-year-old college student, died after drinking lemonade she bought at a cafeteria. to which an amount of caffeine had been added that would exceed that of a can of the Red Bull energy drink and another of Monster combined, which is why, a year after the tragedy, all the restaurants of the Panera Bread chain now warn of its consumption.

As announced by the company, Panera Bread now offers “improved” information about its high-caffeine lemonade, following a lawsuit filed by the family of a young woman who died after consuming the drink.

According to NBC News, The 21-year-old girl, identified as Sarah Katz, had a cardiac arrest hours after drinking a glass of “Loaded Lemonade” from a Panera Bread chain store.located in the city of Philadelphia, in the United States.

According to the lawsuit, Sarah Katz, an Ivy League student with a heart condition, died in 2022 after consuming Panera’s “loaded lemonade.”

Even in the wrongful death lawsuit, photographs of the menu of the store’s beverage dispensers were attached. Based on these, it was detailed that The lemonade was “offered alongside all of Panera’s caffeine-free and/or lower-caffeinated beverages” and was advertised as a “clean, plant-based” drink that contained as much caffeine as the restaurant’s dark roast coffee, which is false. .

The drink, in its large presentation, contains 390 milligrams of caffeine, almost the 400 milligrams daily maximum that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says healthy adults can safely consume.

Lawsuit Calls “Large Lemonade” “A Dangerous Energy Drink” and argues that Panera failed to adequately warn consumers about its ingredients, which include guarana extract, another stimulant.

One tall glass contains more caffeine than standard cans of Red Bull and Monster energy drinks combined, as well as the equivalent of nearly 30 tablespoons of sugar.

According to the investigation, the university student who suffered from heart disease died after drinking said lemonade. “She was very attentive to what she had to do to stay safe,” Victoria Conroy, a friend with whom she shared her room, told NBC. residency at the University of Pennsylvania.

“I guarantee you that if Sarah had known how much caffeine was in it, she would never have touched it,” he said.
