“I saw the shooter behind me”: Witnesses to the Maine shooting tell how they protected their children

After the unfortunate shooting that occurred in Maine that left 22 people dead, some details of the tragedy are beginning to become known, such as the accounts of witnesses who survived the attack.

One of the places where the shooting took place is Just In Time Recreation, a local bowling alley where, at that time, a children’s bowling tournament was taking place, so there were several minors and parents inside.

It was one of these people who spoke to the ABC News cameras to detail what they experienced in those moments. Riley Dumont had been cheering her daughter on11, at the children’s bowling league when he heard multiple gunshots.

Riley’s husband, a retired police officer, ordered his family and others to hide in a corner. To do this, he placed tables and a large bench behind which they could hide and protect themselves from bullets. “I was lying on top of my daughter.”detailed the woman, who added that at one point she saw three or four victims of the attack.

A bullet grazed his daughter’s leg

Meghan Hutchinson was another woman who was at the bowling alley with her 10-year-old daughter Zoey.

“When I turned around, I saw the shooter right behind me, he had just entered the door.”Hutchinson told ABC News. “I don’t know if it was just a warning shot or if he actually shot someone.”

The woman said they ran through swinging doors into the mechanical area of ​​the bowling alley to hide, but a bullet grazed Zoey’s leg.

“I never thought I would grow up and take a bullet in the leg. Because? “Why would people do this?” said the minor when interviewed.

They were just trying to have a family night

Nichoel Wyman, another woman who was passing by the bowling alley at the time with her young daughter, saw the police searching the survivors and witnessed that at least one person seemed to have “blood everywhere,” she recalled. CNN.

He said his daughter was understandably shaken. “She started crying and said, ‘This is a scary world we live in, mom.’. I say, ‘I know.'”

In addition, he explained that he saw several children among the survivors of the shooting. “That was probably the hardest part, seeing families leaving there and knowing that happened while they were probably just trying to have a family night,” she noted.

After attacking the bowling alley with what appeared to be a military-style semi-automatic rifle, the gunman identified as Robert Card continued his killing spree at a nearby bar, Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant.

The mass shooting claimed the lives of at least 22 people at two locations in Lewiston, Maine’s second-largest city.

The city remains under shelter-in-place orders as authorities continue to search for the suspect, who is considered armed and dangerous.
