Last weekend something unusual was seen in the NFL: one player missed three kicks, two field goals and an extra point, the latter which is almost taken for granted as it is practically part of the protocol after any score.

This cost him his job to the experienced Brett Maher who was fired this Tuesday Los Angeles Rams after missing kicks that added up to seven points, just the difference by which his team was defeated 24-17 against Pittsburgh on Sunday in week 7 of the 2023 NFL season.

“There are seven points that were lost, which were key and critical for the direction of a game that was very close. hOh kicks on long attempts that are difficult, but obviously you have to score the extra point“Rams coach Sean McVay criticized Maher, who was informed of the decision on Tuesday.

The setback cost Los Angeles to remain with a negative balance of three games won and four lost, what positions them in the third place in the West division of the National Conference.

Brett Maher did it again

Interestingly, although what happened is not often seen, this is the second time this year that Brett Maher has been fired of a team for its failed kick attempts.

Last March the 33-year-old kicker was cut by the Dallas Cowboys, with which he missed four consecutive extra point attempts in January, a record in NFL history.

In the Rams’ loss last Sunday Maher missed attempts of 53 and 51 yards, and the extra point which, since 2015, is carried out from the 15 yard line.

Who is Brett Maher?

The player born in Fremont, Nebraska, made his way into the NFL on the practice squads of the New York Jets, which he joined in 2013, then in the Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos.

He has played as a starter with the Dallas Cowboys in the 2018, 2019 and 2022 campaigns, and with the New Orleans Saints in the 2021 season.

In seven games with the Los Angeles Rams this season, Maher he connected on 17 field goals of 23 attempts; His worst record was on kicks of 50 or more yards in which he only connected three of seven.

Lucas Havrisik will take over

To cover the loss of Brett Maher, the franchise hired rookie Lucas Havrisik, who has been on the practice squads of the Indianapolis Colts and Cleveland Browns, but has not debuted in the regular season.

The 24-year-old played for the Arizona Wildcats in college football.
