The film produced by Mexican actress Yalitza Aparicio, is set to hit the big screen in the United States in April 2024, Deadline reported. Distributor Roadside Attractions acquired the United States distribution rights to this film, which addresses the issue of child slave labor in the country.
Dreamer is a thriller inspired by a case of labor exploitation in a clandestine factory in El Monte, California. The film marks the debut as Mohit Ramchandani directorial. The cast is headed by Ari Lopez, Alfredo Castro, Paulina Gaitán, Diego Calva and Renata Vaca.
The story follows Jesus (played by Ari Lopez), a young farmer in Mexico who dreams of playing for his soccer team, Club Puebla. With the promise of training at a football camp in Los Angeles, Jesús is convinced by his father to leave home, but soon discovers that he has been sold to a clandestine factory in downtown Los Angeles, where he is subjected to a schedule 18-hour work schedule, under the command of The Boss (played by Alfredo Castro).
The film was produced and financed by Rufus Parker of P2 Films, Jon Graham and Matt Diezel, with the participation of Yalitza Aparicio as executive produceralong with the Mexican Luis Mandoki and Daljit DJ Parmar, from Original Entertainment.
He director Mohit RamchandanHe emphasized to Deadline that “Dreamer” has no political bias or specific agenda, but simply presents the story of a young man whose dreams are taken away and replaced by the nightmare of slavery.
“His (Jesus’) story is just one of more than 2.8 million undocumented migrants who crossed the border in 2023 and whose forced labor is an unforgivable stain on countless corporate products,” the director said.
The film had its world debut in the Mammoth Film Festival in March of this year, under the title “Bonded”. After passing through the festival, the North American distribution rights to the film were purchased by Roadside Attractions, which will release the film in theaters in the United States on April 5, 2024.
