President Joe Biden’s administration is heading to build a portion of the border wall between the borders of Texas and Mexicoincluding through the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge and neighboring lands, the United States Center for Biological Diversity reported in a statement.
“The Biden administration announced today that for the first time will waive environmental, public health and cultural resource protection laws to accelerate border wall construction between the United States and Mexico in Texas,” the statement said.
The national nonprofit conservation organization, which says it has more than 1.7 million members and online activists dedicated to protecting endangered species and wild places, lamented that President Biden has set aside environmental laws to build walls in Starr County, Texas.
“It is disheartening to see President Biden stoop to this leveldisregarding our nation’s fundamental environmental laws to build ineffective border walls that kill wildlife,” said Laiken Jordahl, southwest conservation advocate at the Center for Biological Diversity.
“Starr County is home to some of the most spectacular habitats and biologically important remains in Texas and now the bulldozers are preparing to go through it. This is a terrible step backwards for the border areas,” commented Laiken Jordahl.
According to the organization, Biden administration will use waiver authority to leave out 26 laws that are aimed at protecting water, wildlife and indigenous graves in the region to make way for the construction of a wall that will seal the Rio Grande.
“Every acre of habitat left in the Rio Grande Valley is irreplaceable. We cannot afford to lose any more to a useless medieval wall that will do nothing to stop immigration or smuggling. “President Biden’s cynical decision to destroy a wildlife refuge and seal the beautiful Rio Grande behind a grotesque border wall must be stopped,” Jordahl said.
