Eugenio Derbez will receive an award at the GEMS Miami Film Festival

Next November 2, the GEMS Film Festival from Miami, Florida, will begin with the screening of the feature film “Radical”, which features the Featured performance by Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez. The event will also present Derbez with the GEMS Impact Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the Latin American entertainment landscape and her focus on improving educational equity for Latino students.

The tenth edition of this festival, one of the two annual events of the Miami Film Festival (MFF), will present a varied program that includes a total of 26 feature films from 14 different countries. Among them, “Radical” stands out, directed by Christopher Zalla and based on real events that revolve around the life of a school teacher in a border area affected by violence and corruption.

After the screening of “Radical”, Eugenio Derbez will be honored with the GEMS’ Impact Award for his outstanding influence in Latin American entertainment and his support for the cause of educational equality for Latino students, as announced by the organization of the event, which is sponsored by Miami Dade College University (MDC).

The four-day festival program will take place at MDC’s Koubek Center and Silverspot Cinema. It will include a special “Four Centerpiece Screenings” section, in which the latest film from Juan Antonio Bayona“The Snow Society”, which has been selected to represent Spain at the 96th edition of the Oscar Awards.

In addition, this section will present films such as “American Fiction”, recent winner of the audience award at the Toronto Festival, directed by Cord Jefferson; “The Boy and the Heron,” an animated film by Hayao Miyazaki, and “Saltburn,” by Emerald Fennell.

The closing of the festival, on November 5, will be “The Holdovers”, directed by acclaimed American director Alexander Payne and starring Paul Giamatti, known for his work in the series “Billions”.

He GEMS Festival will also screen other films that have been shortlisted as candidates for Best International Film at the next Oscar Awards, which will be held in March 2024. Among them are “Totem”, directed by Lila Avilés and of Mexican origin, and “The Promise Land”, a Danish production directed by renowned German filmmaker Wim Wenders.

The Festival, which celebrates its tenth edition in November, is an integral part of the Miami Film Festivalwhich will reach its 41st edition in April 2024. This festival, organized by Miami Dade College, stands out as the main event for the presentation of Ibero-American cinema in the United States and an important platform for international and documentary cinema.

Notably, the MFF is the only major festival held within an educational institution in the United States, and over the past five years it has showcased films from more than 60 countries, including 300 world, international, North American, and American premieres. the east coast, according to the organization in a statement.
