Amazon hires 16,000 workers in Southern California for the holiday season

Amazon announced that it will hire 16,000 workers for its warehouse network in Southern California to cover the Christmas shopping season.

The company aims to add more than 30,000 sources of employment in the Golden Stateas part of the effort to fill more than 250,000 jobs nationwide ahead of one of the busiest shopping seasons of the year.

Some of the jobs will be full time, while others will be part-time or exclusively for the Christmas season.

Amazon seeks to hire 100,000 more workers than in the last two Christmas seasons.

Besides, The company announced it is also increasing the average starting wage for new workers to $20.50 per hour.. In some areas, base wages will reach $28 per hour.

The job offer is for various functions, from packaging and picking to sorting and shipping products. They are available to applicants of all backgrounds and experience levels, with a flexibility of jobs available with a wide range of hours, salaries and benefits..

“The holiday season is always a special time at Amazon and we are excited to hire an additional 250,000 people this year to help serve customers across the country,” said Amazon Senior Vice President of Worldwide Operations John Felton.

“Whether someone is looking for a short-term way to make extra money or is hoping to take the first step toward a fulfilling and rewarding career at Amazon, there is a position available for them,” he added.

The executive mentioned that A worker who starts working now at Amazon will be able to see a salary increase of 13% in the next three yearsplus opportunities like prepaid college tuition with Career Choice and health care benefits from day one

Amazon has a strong presence in the Inland Empire, with more than 40 robotic fulfillment centers, sorting facilities and delivery stationsin addition to the company’s KSBD air hub at San Bernardino International Airport.

The company said 54% of Inland Empire workers hired during the last decade were not working before, while for 14% it represented their first job.

According to report from an external consulting firm, since 2010 Amazon has invested $142 billion in California, which include infrastructure and compensation to their employees; in addition to creating more than 160,000 direct jobs in the state.
