Before starting this article I emphasize my respect for Nancy Pelosi, 83 years old, and to whom I wish good health. I emphasize that in most cases I have not agreed with her decisions, but I am amazed by her desire to continue in her position as a legislator.
However, it is time to rest. Let the new generations of politicians learn, exercise and advance in leadership in the state of California and throughout the United States.
Like millions of Americans, we have witnessed the public outbursts of officials such as the current president of the United States, Joe Biden, 81; of the moments of apparent fear and paralysis that the leader of the Republican caucus, Mitch McConnell, 81, has suffered; or the sad images of 90-year-old Senator Dianne Feinstein’s deteriorating health.
To all of them and to the politicians over 75 years of age, my absolute respect and I wish you the best in your health. But it’s time to step aside. They have already worked enough and given their best years to the nation; Now is the time, if there is so much love to continue serving, to do so voluntarily as advisors, but not with a public position.
For the good of their health and for the good of the nation, it is time to encourage younger politicians, who in many cases will better understand the changes of a society that evolves and advances by leaps and bounds.
Furthermore, it is important to embrace new times that require openness and generational understanding that, on many occasions, is more complicated for older representatives in state Congresses or in Washington, DC.
It is imperative to give opportunity to new generations of officials; Californians and the nation in general will be better represented, with leaders who, like Pelosi, Feinstein, Biden or McConell, did at the time, fighting for the rights, freedoms and obligations of those they represent.
Above all, the decision to step aside will be a great example for politicians to understand that no one is indispensable in any position; in addition to the importance of preparing the officials who come after, setting an example to see a younger, more vigorous and more representative Congress of today’s society.
Although it seems that this is a criticism of elderly politicians, it is more of a wake-up call for the Democratic Party and the Republican Party; We know that without the support of these two organizations, the vast majority of officials at that level would not run on their own, unless they have too much money.
It is clear that the aforementioned candidates, and many others, are not the true decision-makers for which their constituents elected them; They are the power groups behind them, who surely advance and attend to their agendas first than the agendas and desires of the American people.
Now we understand why there are no more measures with restrictions on weapons, universal health insurance or a stop to the war in Ukraine, among many other issues.
If the nomination of candidates over 75 years of age continues, it would mean a mockery on the part of the Political Parties for that electorate that they claim to defend and represent. This also explains why more Americans are registered without party affiliation than as Republicans or Democrats.
