California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom has a message for voters who believe President Joe Biden will not run again in the 2024 election.
“We need to move past this notion that he’s not going to run,” Newsom told NBC’s “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd in an interview clip released Friday. “President Biden is running and I look forward to seeing him re-elected.”
Newsom’s comments renew his stance to deny speculation about a possible run for the White House in 2024.
The governor of California has long said that will not challenge Biden for the 2024 Democratic nomination, but he continues to be talked about as a possible future presidential candidate.
“I think there has been a lot of hype in the last few months and angst in this regard,” Newsom said. “But we are preparing for the campaign. We are looking forward to it.”
He said his message to donors wondering whether the Democratic Party’s nominee will be someone besides Biden is: “It’s time to move on. Come on”.
When asked if for some reason Biden doesn’t end up running for president, Newsom responded that Vice President Kamala Harris is the one who is “naturally aligned” for the job.
Newsom and Harris have been very close for years in the political sphere, Newsom recalled, rising through the ranks of politics in San Francisco and California.
Asked if he would consider running against Harris, Newsom said: “Of course not. By definition. It will not happen”.
Newsom’s full interview with “Meet the Press” will air Sunday on NBC News.
