The Senate concluded on Wednesday the debate on the nomination of the Hispanic Adriana Kugler for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve (Fed), with a vote of 52 to 45.
Dr. Kugler, a Colombian-American, will be the first Latina to serve on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.
Adriana Kugler is the US Executive Director of the World Bank. She was nominated for that position by President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate in April 2022. She is also a professor of public policy and economics at Georgetown University.
Kugler has been noted for her previous work as an economic policy researcher and has been recognized with the 2007 John T. Dunlop Outstanding Scholar Award from the Employment and Labor Relations Association.
The PhD in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley was also Chief Economist of the Department of Labor between 2011 and 2013.
In May 2023, Biden announced his intention to nominate Kugler for a seat on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.
On the same Wednesday, a few hours earlier, the Senate confirmed Dr. Lisa Cook and Dr. Phillip Jefferson in senior positions at the Federal Reserve.
Dr. Philip Jefferson was nominated for Federal Reserve Vice Chairman and approved in an 88-10 vote that signaled broad bipartisan support for the second-in-command of the US central bank when the body responsible for economic and financial policy is nearing a turning point in its battle against inflation.
The senators also confirmed Fed Governor Lisa Cook for a new 14-year term at the central bank, albeit in a 51-47 vote that broke party lines.
