With 39%, the former head of the capital government, Claudia Sheinbaum wins the internal contest of Morena and becomes the presidential candidate for Morena’s party in the 2024 elections.
“The comprehensive analysis of these data allows us to unquestionably conclude that Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo obtained the best position to be considered as coordinator of the committees for the defense of the fourth transformation,” announced Alfonso Durazo, president of the National Council of Morena. .
This is a historical result, since it will be the first time that a woman leads the race for the presidency of Mexicowith a political career of more than 20 years together with the current president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has almost a year ahead of him to consolidate his own project.
Sheinbaum, who led the polls from the start of the internal process, will face Xóchitl Gálvez in June 2024the candidate of the opposition Broad Front for Mexico, so the country is closer than ever to having its first female president.
The former president of the capital obtained 39.4% of the preferences in the survey of the Commission of the Center for Statistical and Social Studies of the party, with which it surpassed his closest rival, former Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, who obtained 25.6%.
They were followed by the deputy with a license from the Labor Party (PT) Gerardo Fernández Noroña (12.2%), the former Secretary of the Interior Adán Augusto López (10%), the former leader of the Morena senators Ricardo Monreal (6.5%), and the licensed senator from the Green Party (PVEM) Manuel Velasco 6.3%.
Sheinbaum, born in 1962 into a Jewish family in Mexico City, studied for a doctorate in environmental engineering and began her political career as Secretary of the Environment for the Federal District in 2000, when the now president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, was head of government.
“We are certain that under your leadership we will consolidate the important achievements already achieved and we will successfully face the new challenges to make Mexico a more democratic, prosperous and just country,” said Durazo.
Although Sheinbaum led the polls from start to finish, his victory was marred by allegations of Ebrard, who hours before the announcement demanded to repeat the internal process due to an excess of “incidents” that left the contest “invalid”.
