Traffic accident on Atlanta freeway left five dead and three injured

Five people were killed and three injured in a crash in Atlanta early Monday on the ramp from westbound SR 316 to southbound Interstate 85 in Gwinnett County, according to police.

The accident occurred just before 4 a.m. local time when 911 calls were received reporting that a vehicle “ran over the wall of the flyover ramp and fell onto the interstate 85 collector-distributor southbound to Pleasant.” Hill Rd,” according to a news release from the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office.

County fire personnel identified five people dead at the scene, while three others were taken to local hospitals, according to the news release.

The ramp from Highway 316 west to I-85 south was closed for several hours Monday and reopened just before 9 a.m. local time.

“The main travel lanes of I85 SB are clear and reopened. The I85 SB and SR316 WB CDs remain closed and will be closed for an extended period while the Gwinnett County Police Accident Investigation Unit handles the investigation,” Gwinnett Police officials posted on Facebook.

It has not yet been determined what factors led to the collision or the severity of the injuries to the survivors, police said in the news release.
