Police search for Hispanic man who fatally shot a woman after a street altercation in Houston

HOUSTON – The Department of Houston police are asking for the community’s help in locating a man accused of shooting a woman to death while she was inside a vehicle in the northwest part of the city two years ago.

Romualdo Josue Mendez, 31, faces murder charges in Harris County State District 351 Court.

Mendez has been charged with the murder of 35-year-old Stacey Berghoff.

According to investigators, Mendez and another man were looking at some furniture that was lying outside a residence. The vehicle the men were driving was blocking the exit of the victim’s vehicle on the 8600 block of Rayson Street.

Police reported that the suspect got out of his Ford F-150 truck and confronted the victim in her parked vehicle. The altercation escalated to a physical degree and they began to fight, officers said the woman cut Mendez with a knife and walked away from the scene.

The suspect got into his truck and began to chase the victim. Upon reaching the vehicle that the Méndez woman was driving, she fired several shots into the victim’s car.

The woman was hit once and lost control of the vehicle, a friend who was traveling with the woman managed to stop the vehicle.

The suspect fled the scene.

When emergency crews arrived on the scene they tried to help Berghoff, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
