The President of the United States, Joe Biden, will advocate for a reform of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during the G20 summit in September in India, the White House reported on Tuesday.
The president will travel to New Delhi on September 7 to participate in the summit, which will take place on September 9 and 10.
“Biden will put his energy while he is there into modernizing the World Bank and the IMF”White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said in a telephone conversation with reporters.
According to Biden’s adviser, the United States has heard “loud and clear” that countries want increased financial support for the challenges they face.
The Democratic president will put on the table to increase “the capacity of multilateral development banks to better fight poverty and address the important transnational challenges that affect countries around the world”.
Biden, according to Sullivan, is committed to “reshaping and taking the World Bank further in the face of more effective poverty reduction and inclusive economic growth, along with other global challenges, such as the post-COVID-19 recovery.”
The Democratic president will also speak “on different joint efforts to address everything from the transition to clean energy to the fight against climate change and the mitigation of the economic and social impact of Russia’s war in Ukraine.”
Biden will hold different bilateral meetings that have not yet been specified and will reaffirm the United States’ commitment to the G20 as the main forum for global economic cooperation, of which the country will assume the rotating presidency in 2026.
