The defense lawyer, Konstantín Yerojin, explained on Telegram that the ruling issued during a secret trial will not be appealed since his client, Katerina Mayerswhose passport was returned, now wants to continue her life in Russia.

Mayers, a former FSB border guard captain in the North Caucasus named Alexandr Chumakov, broke the law that prevents former agents of structures with access to state secrets from leaving the country until 2026.

“I have fully recognized my guilt so that they let me live in peace, get ahead and work on myself, to show everyone that I am a worthy representative of society,” she said. Mayers explained that he tried to cross the border in December 2022 due to the discrimination of the Russian state towards transgender people and the threats he received from his former colleagues.

In addition, the legislation establishes the annulment of the marriage if one of the spouses undergoes a sex reassignment. The 2020 constitutional reform introduced into Russia the concept that marriage is strictly a union between a man and a woman.

Even before Putin signed the law, the Russian Justice annulled the first marriage after one of the couple submitted a request to change their sex on personal documents, an option allowed until recently.
