He former leader of a security patrol in Brooklyn’s ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, New York, pleaded guilty Friday to charges of sexual abuse of a teenager.
The guilty plea allows Jacob Daskal, who led a neighborhood watch group called shomrim, to avoid trial in a case alleging he sexually harassed a 15-year-old girl.
As part of the plea agreement, Daskal must register as a sex offender, according to the US Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn cited by AP.
The authorities said that Daskal subjected the girl to sexual acts over a period of three months in 2017 and was arrested in 2018.
“The defendant admitted that he abused his power, trust and position in the community by committing deplorable acts against a child in his care,” said US Attorney Breon Peace.
Daskal faces a minimum prison sentence of 14 years.
The man headed the Boro Park Shomrim Society, an Orthodox Jewish crime-policing group associated with the New York Police Department.
Teacher arrested in Los Angeles
On the other coast of the country, a Hispanic elementary school teacher was arrested last week on suspicion of sexually assaulting six female students. This was reported by Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón.
Martín Reyes Jr., 29, was charged with the crime and faces 10 counts of lewd act with a child under 14 years of ageaccording to the Gascón prosecutor’s office.
Reyes Jr. is a first grade teacher at Sunrise Elementary Schoolin East Los Angeles.
According to reports, authorities opened an investigation after he a student filed a complaint on May 22 with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) against the Hispanic teacherwho had allegedly sexually abused her.
Detectives claimed that Reyes Jr. committed sexual abuse against six students enrolled in his class during a recess inside a classroomthe Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said.
