Jorge Berry, from the newscast to the Super Bowl and then to the wars
Jorge Berry, born in Mexico City and a rocker in his youth, was in the media for around 50 yearsincluding a long period as a commentator, reporter and later host on Televisa programs.
One of the spaces where Berry first became known was as head of the sports section of Jacobo Zabludovsky’s 24 Hours news program in the mid-1970s. Shortly after, he joined the NFL broadcasts led by Fernando Von Rossum, considered the most illustrious chronicler in Spanish of American football. Berry was a color commentator.
As a curious fact, Berry was the one who announced the assassination of John Lennon during a Monday Night Football game on December 8, 1980 during a Televisa broadcast. A video posted on Twitter attests to this.
Berry got an offer to move to work in Los Angeles, where one of his occupations was that of the official chronicler in Spanish for the Raiders, who then lived in southern California. After the black and silver team beat Washington in Super Bowl XVIII in January 1984, Jorge Berry received a championship ring. It is believed that he was the first Mexican chronicler to have a Super Bowl ring, a distinction that accompanied him for almost the rest of his life.
Joaquín López Dóriga, another longtime Televisa journalist, revealed during an interview for the ForoTV channel that Jorge Berry joined the news team that he led for a curious reason.
“Dear Jorge Berry was an extraordinary character. Note that he entered Noticieros because he was in love – this is gossip, but they always told you – with Lola Ayala. Yes, and until he married Lola, ”López Dóriga recounted.
Berry and the famous news host Lolita Ayala’s marriage lasted less than a yearaccording to testimonies from other communicators.
“RIP Jorge Berry. He is gone with love and affection from his family. Thank you for what you taught me and gave me. Thank you for opening the doors for me,” journalist Fernando Schwartz wrote on Twitter.
“Rest in peace Jorge dear. Thank you for everything you have done for me, for the opportunities you have opened up for me, for the privilege of working with you, and for enjoying your friendship until now. You were a second father,” wrote commentator Enrique Burak.
Berry became vice president of the defunct information system ECO, of Televisa, and as a reporter he covered the funerals of Princess Diana. His experience in international news included coverage of war.
Between 2000 and 2002 he was the host of the Primero Noticias program together with Lourdes Ramos. And it is for this reason that he was one of the rapporteurs of the attack on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, where together with other drivers and surrounded by confusion before the shocking events of that morning in New York, he tried to explain the dramatic situation. .
Jorge Berry was also a columnist in various print media, including the Mexican newspaper El Financiero in the last years of his journalistic activity.
