On October 5, 2022, the former Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrardwho is now a presidential candidate, declared during a session in the Senate that joe arpaio “promoted the murder of migrants,” referring to the trafficking of 1,482 firearms from Arizona to Mexico.
Nine months after those statements, the former official is the subject of a lawsuit filed by the former Maricopa County sheriff for alleged defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress and civil battery.
Through a statement, Arpaio indicated that the complaint was filed in a Palm Beach County court, Florida, while his lawyer Larry Klayman assured that Ebrard’s words damaged his client’s reputation and put his life in danger.
“My client has been a distinguished public servant for decades, serving not only as Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona for more than 25 years, but also held other senior roles within the DEA,” said Klayman, founder of Judicial Watch and Freedom Watch.
The plaintiff asserted that Arpaio has already received several death threats due to the statements of the Mexican politician, as revealed by EFE.
He also explained that the lawsuit was opted for since the request for a public apology that Arpaio previously requested was ignored by Mexican officials.
He also complained that the former sheriff did not find support from President Joe Biden’s Administration when he asked National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan to help him clear his name.
The former sheriff also requested assistance from Arizona Sen. Krysten Sinema, who did not respond to his request.
