Former world number one Naomi Osaka has given birth to a girl and plans to return to the slopes for the 2024 Australian Open, The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said today on its website.
The Japanese announced that she was pregnant last January on her social media, where she said she hoped her son would watch her matches and posted a photo of an ultrasound and also added that 2023 would be “a year full of lessons” for her, so he hoped to return to tennis in 2024.
According to the IOC, the news would have been confirmed by the Osaka couple, the American rapper Cordae, during a concert on the occasion of the Calgary Stampede rodeo, which is held this July in that Canadian city.
Osaka, 25, last played in September 2022 at the Tokyo Premier, where she withdrew before her second-round match, complaining of abdominal pain. and now occupies position 436 in the world ranking (until July 3).
At last year’s Grand Slam events, Osaka lost in the third round in Melbourne, in the first round at Roland Garros and the US Open and also missed Wimbledon due to an Achilles tendon injury.
Naomi Osaka, the daughter of a Haitian-American father and a Japanese mother, plays in international competitions on behalf of Japan and is known for reflecting on mental health in sport.
