Special Counsel in Classified Documents Case Calls for Trump Trial to Be Delayed

The extension of the deadline for the start of the trial argues that the case “has to do with classified information, so it will be necessary for the defense to obtain the required security authorizations.”

US District Judge Aileen Cannon set a tentative date of August 14 for the start of the trial, in Fort Pierce, 130 miles from Miami.

Despite the closeness of the date, US media such as The Hill and Politico qualified that it is difficult for the trial to begin so soon since Trump’s defense will surely try to delay the process.

Some experts estimated that the trial could be delayed beyond the 2024 presidential election.

Trump was charged in the Miami courts with 37 federal crimes for mishandling official United States government documents that were found during a search at his residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.

Of the 37 charges indicted, of which Trump pleaded not guilty31 are for deliberately withholding US defense-related documents. But he is also charged with obstructing justice and “corruptly” concealing documents or records.

Some of those crimes are punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
